Alisa Cheng, a bright child, struggled in school despite active participation and correct answers in class. Her inconsistent performance during tests, along with losing school books and forgetting homework, raised concerns for her mother, Moonlake Lee. Alisa’s academic difficulties continued, resulting in her failing Chinese in Primary 4 and facing potential retention after failing five out of eight subjects by the end of Secondary 3. Following a developmental assessment, Alisa was diagnosed with ADHD, a common neurodevelopmental disorder affecting around 5% of the global population. Just three years after her diagnosis, Alisa’s path took a remarkable turn. She excelled in her A levels through an accelerated program and recently flew to England to pursue a degree in a competitive field.
Alisa’s transformation from despair to hope inspired Moonlake to establish Unlocking ADHD. The organisation aims to raise awareness and support for individuals with ADHD. It launches on October 1, 2023 – the first day of ADHD Awareness Month, featuring a keynote speech by renowned American developmental and behavioural paediatrician, Dr Dan Shapiro.
