ADHD 2.0 introduces a new term – VAST, to describe those with ADHD and ADHD-like symptoms caused by the conditions of modern life. It aims to remove the stigma attached to a disorder by re-thinking it as a trait. They also introduce the concept of the Task Positive Network (TPN), when we are engaged in a task, and the Default Mode Network (DMN), which is our default state once the task is done. The switch between the TPN and DMN in ADHD brains is glitchy and as a result, the DMN takes over. The DMN is particularly dominant in addiction, rumination and catastrophic thinking. The key is to outsmart the Demon to distract yourself with tasks like meditation, exercise and human connection.
Finding the right kind of difficult is discussed, where doing a strengths inventory helps ADHDers focus on their “ikigai” (sweet spot) – things they like doing, that they are good at and that someone would pay them to do.
Creating the right kind of environment is also important in thriving with ADHD. Structure, nutrition, vitamins and supplements, sufficient sleep, positivity and exercise are essential in providing the support structures that enable ADHDers to thrive. c
